Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam producers were not happy with Aishwarya Rai as Nandini?

Yes, it was Kareena Kapoor Khan who was first chosen for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. But Kareena had rejected the film as she wanted to focus on her studies. After that, Aishwarya was chosen for this role. Sanjay Leela Bhansali chose Aishwarya and the producers of the film were not sure of the casting. Aishwarya Rai Bahchan was the former Miss World that time but her being in the film was not liked by many.

The producers were doubtful that Aishwarya might ever come across as Nandini. She had a very western image ever since she had won the Miss World crown but Nandini was a very desi girl character. But Sanjay Leela Bhansali came up with a solution to this.

He came up with a marvel of an idea going down in the history of films. He decided to tie her hair in a plait and give her a traditional look. Her look was decided there itself. There is also a story that Aishwarya was supposed to make her debut with Aamir Khan in Raja Hindustani but that did not happen.
